EX-PRESS® Glaucoma Filtration Device

express

The EX-PRESS® Glaucoma Filtration Device is a medical device that diverts aqueous fluid from the anterior chamber to a subconjunctival reservoir without removing sclera or tissue from the iris. The size of a grain of rice, the EX-PRESS device is MRI-compatible and FDA-approved as an alternative to trabeculectomy surgery for patients with open-angle glaucoma.

Trabeculectomy was once considered the standard surgical treatment for glaucoma. The trabeculectomy procedure involves cutting a small hole in the sclera to create a new drainage passage. The EX-PRESS shunt reduces trauma and inflammation to the tissue by placing it under a scleral flap. The EX-PRESS shunt offers comparable results with a shorter recovery time and fewer complications.

The EX-PRESS device reduces the risks of surgery for patients with glaucoma and helps prevent permanent vision loss. While results vary with each patient, most glaucoma patients were able to significantly lower their medications as a result of the procedure.
